"When people say 'you can't teach an old dog new tricks' it's not true, because you can reinvent yourself and learn new things whenever you want." - Jonathan Van Ness (Queer Eye)
Lifeflix, much like Netflix, is a blog which constantly strives to create new and innovative content which appeals to all of our readers.
This week's topic about to be discussed is very special and is often pushed aside. No one wants to be alone or feel remotely out of contact with the world. Everyone should feel welcomed and proud of who they are -- but that's not always the case. Being a supporter of the LGBTQ community, I understand and see the difficulties. My gay uncles of two different ethnicities, my best friend who hid afraid of the reactions of not only his family, but the world. The side-eyes on the street, the subtle mumbling and whispering, or the half-smiles. This is the spectrum in which this community lives in -- and it's not easy.
However, with much research and consistent watching of my own: I have found three television shows which showcase a unique perspective into the LGBTQ community. Whether you are coping with your own sexuality or just want to know and become more exposed or connected to the community, these television shows are sure to be added to your binge-watching bucket-list.
TOP TELEVISION SHOWS ON NETFLIX TO COPE WITH LGBTQ CONTENT:
A Netflix Original Series
focusing on a group of gay individuals (The Fab Five) who collectively
makeover/improve the life of another. From redecorating one’s home, revamping
one’s style, or offering seldom advice – the Fab Five make a strong
inspirational statement throughout each episode. Although this is essentially a
reality/documentary show, each episode focuses on LGBTQ content such as:
acceptance, fear, and coping with one’s own sexuality.
A Netflix Original Series
focusing on the life of Kimmy Schmidt as she adjusts to her living circumstances
in New York. Although Kimmy is the main character, Titus Andromedon steals the
thunder of this television sitcom. Not only does he help Kimmy adjust, but he himself
must learn to live amongst the streets of New York as an openly-gay black male
striving to work on Broadway. This show contains LGBTQ content such as: fear of
being in an open-relationship, hiding one’s sexuality, and being proud to be
apart of the LGBTQ community.
A CW Original Series
inspired by the Archie Comics follows the story of Archie Andrews and his
friends in the small town of Riverdale. While this teen-drama deals with high-school,
it also explores the darkness hidden within the town and within the conflicted
character’s themselves. While Archie is the main character, there are multiple
LGBTQ characters within the series such as: Cheryl Blossom, Kevin Keller, Toni
Topaz, and Moose Mason. This show contains LGBTQ content such as: fear/acceptance
of open relationships, familial issues of acceptance/trust, a hatred/love for the
LGBTQ community, and much more. By showing various scenarios, Riverdale is able
to express a duality of real-life situations that can easily help individuals within
their own journey.
WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH THESE SHOWS WITH LGBTQ CONTENT?
- The portrayal of LGBTQ characters is of vital importance, especially within today’s society. By including different characters within different shows/setting with varying genres of Netflix content not only showcases the LGBTQ community, but it also gives them a sense of representation. When individuals can connect with a character that is much like themselves, they can instantly see them as a role-model and a means of inspiration to carry them through their everyday lives.
- By entering the LGBTQ sphere, individuals will unlock a new varied perspective than what was previously known or available to them before. It is better to broaden one’s perspective of representation than to limit their exposure.
- When specific situations are being touched on such as: questioning/denying one’s sexuality, being publicly open/closed with your relationship, and much more -- individuals have a reflective moment which (in most cases) is very refreshing and informative to learn how to deal with or be aware of.
While these are not the only shows (by any means) which showcase LGBTQ content, these are the three best television series to be introduced to.
